Alocasia Sedenii Aurea Variegated

A gold medal hybrid from the late 19th century — now carrying one of the most visually striking variegation expressions in the genus.

The Alocasia Sedenii was developed during the rise of European hybridisation and is widely attributed to John Seden of Veitch Nurseries — one of the most influential horticultural institutions of the era. Its parentage traces back to two Bornean species: Alocasia Cuprea and Alocasia Lowii, both originating from the same island. The hybrid was awarded for its distinct form and shares its lineage with other documented Veitch hybrids from the same period, including the Chelsonii.

The aurea variegated form expresses yellow and gold pigmentation through carotenoids — a completely different mechanism from albo variegation (absent chlorophyll) or pink variegation (anthocyanins). Where albo tissue appears white and pink tissue carries active pigment, aurea expression results from reduced chlorophyll combined with the presence of carotenoid pigments, producing the characteristic golden, lime and yellow tones that collectors prize. The pattern is chimeric in nature — unstable, unpredictable and unrepeatable through tissue culture.

Care:
The Sedenii is a robust hybrid with a compact, manageable growth habit. It thrives in chunky, well-draining substrate — perlite combined with aroid mix — consistent moisture without waterlogging, and 65-80% humidity with good air circulation. Bright indirect light supports healthy growth and maintains aurea expression. Intermediate grower, suitable for serious collectors building toward more demanding species.
